About Film: Musical Sunday: Gypsy (1962)
Musical Sunday remembers Stephen Sondheim with a screening of Gypsy (1962), starring Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood and Karl Malden.
Sondheim, who died in November, started as a lyricist of the musicals West Side Story and Gypsy, before writing both music and lyrics for his subsequent triumphs such as A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd. The film adaptation of Gypsy followed on from the successful film of West Side Story (1961), which also starred Natalie Wood, and was directed by veteran Mervyn LeRoy. The music is by Jule Styne.
Based on the 1957 autobiography Gypsy Rose Lee, it tells the story of an ambitious stage mother who tries to get her two daughters onto the stage. It’s only when the family ends up in a burlesque theatre that older daughter Louise finds her voice and style.
Doors open at 13.00, and the film starts at 14.00.
Refreshments will be available in our licensed cafe/bar.
