About Film: French Sundaes: Marius et Jeanette (1997)

The tremendous and life-affirming romcom that brought Robert Guédiguian’s Marseilles to the world. Socially aware and engrossing. One of the most intelligent and enjoyable romcoms you are ever likely to see.

Marius and Jeannette live in the same working-class apartment complex in Marseille. Marius is a security guard at an abandoned cement works, and since the company has gone out of business, he is squatting in order to save money. Jeannette is a single mother raising her two children on her own on a meagre supermarket checkout operator salary. They meet when Jeannette tries to steal two cans of paint from the cement lot…

This is screening from a Cinema Museum 35mm print, for the authentic cinema experience.

Each film is accompanied by an introductory illustrated talk by Jon Davies, Tutor in French Cinema at Morley College.

Doors open at 13.00, for a 14.00 start.

Refreshments will be available in our licensed cafe/bar.
