About Film: Kennington Noir presents Laura (1944) on 16mm

Laura (1944), produced and directed by Otto Preminger, starring Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews, with Clifton Webb, Vincent Price, and Judith Anderson.

Laura was Preminger’s first big success at 20th Century Fox. Having developed Vera Caspary’s novel, he was initially only meant to produce, but he and studio head Darryl F. Zanuck became disillusioned with the work of assigned director Rouben Mamoulian, and Preminger replaced him.

New York Detective Mark McPherson (Andrews) is called on to investigate the murder of advertising executive Laura Hunt (Tierney). He interviews the people who knew her, including effete newspaper columnist Waldo Lydecker (Webb) and her playboy fiancé Shelby Carpenter (Price). Reading her letters and diary, Mark becomes obsessed with the dead woman…

“Preminger conjures an enveloping atmosphere thick with cynicism and dread… Guilt is omnipresent; innocence is alien. Few movies make you feel dirtier, and so perversely grateful for the pleasure” (Time Out).

Presented from a 16mm print.

Doors open at 18.30, for a 19.30 start.

Refreshments will be available in our licensed cafe/bar.
