Founded in 1966, the Gothique Film Society specialises in double bills ‘for the connoisseur of the macabre’.

First Man into Space asks whether Lt. Dan Prescott is the right man to pilot the high altitude Y-13 – after all, after experiencing difficulties in the Y-12 he rushed off to see his girlfriend rather than filing his flight report [sounds right to me!!].

Anyway, of course he takes the Y-13 up – but suddenly the craft disappears from its radar tracking! What has happened? And what could possibly be the connection with a blood-thirsty creature that’s ravaging the countryside near where a parachute was seen to come down??

Doctor X, filmed in early Technicolor, is a true classic from the Golden Age of Horror. Produced in that glorious pre-Code era, between the advent of the ‘talkies’ and the inevitable censorship clampdown, this startling film contains adult themes throughout, showcasing as it does the gentle arts of murder, cannibalism and prostitution, in its tale of a being coated with ‘synthetic flesh’.

It was a huge success at the box office, and Warner Bros. quickly followed up with the equally classic Mystery of the Wax Museum the following year. That also starred Fay (King Kong) Wray and Lionel Atwill, and was also directed by the wonderful Michael Curtiz.

The Return of Dr X, which famously stars Humphrey Bogart, is playing at our March show.
