About Listen Club 34: Amy Cunningham 'Near Machine Near Bird'

Over an extended period, Amy has been noticing the places where birds and insects go about their activities amongst aggregate, industrial waterways, freight rail lines, retail parks, and suburban edgelands. The resulting videos, films, drawings and sound compositions are part of a series in which she responds to in-between spaces, and spaces of transition. For 'Near Machine Near Bird', Amy will share extracts from her audio-visual art works which explore the visual and sonic textures created by the overlap of industry and wildlife. She will weave in extracts of music and sounds that inform her work.

Amy Cunningham is an artist who uses the singing voice, sound, video, materials and drawing to explore patterns and glitches in technologies and environments. She has exhibited her music compositions, performances, video installations, and drawings in various galleries and spaces including, Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, IKON Gallery, Cafe OTO, Towner Gallery, Newhaven Art Space, Portland Sculpture Quarry Trust, SC Gallery, Zagreb, and Serpentine Gallery London. Amy is Senior Lecturer and Course Leader of the MA Fine Art, at the University of Brighton.

About Listen Club

A programme of unusual sound-works, soundscape composition, and music from the present and the past, chosen by Sound Art Brighton artists and invited guests.

Listen club is all about coming together to listen to music with the possibility of sharing impressions and casual discussion afterwards. Listen Club hopes to provide a counterpoint to the quick paced personal consumption of music with a more patient shared experience; a deep listen, together, in order to foster community.

Curators will guide the experience - briefly discussing the details of the selections and providing background on the music and artists chosen. We aim to present a variety of styles and listening experiences that may include anything from long duration singular sound works to a series of work on a particular theme. On average we will listen together for 45min to an hour, with time for discussion and conversation afterwards.

Once a month, 7-9pm, at The Rose Hill
