About On London and Denean Rowe present My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) on 16mm

It is 40 years since the original release of this classic London movie, set and shot in Vauxhall and Nine Elms, which broke new ground and explored social conflicts and change in the capital in the mid-1980s.

Directed by Stephen Frears, written by Hanif Kureishi and starring, among others, Gordon Warnecke, Daniel Day-Lewis, Saeed Jaffrey and Shirley Anne Field, it addressed far-right racism, cultural tensions among Pakistani Londoners and gay love.

My Beautiful Laundrette also captured the look, feel, threats and promises of London at the time, as well as showing what an imaginative film maker could achieve with a small budget in a big city location.

This screening will be on 16mm and is brought to you by London writer Dave Hill, publisher and editor of the website OnLondon.co.uk, and urbanist Denean Rowe of Planning Aid London, who is a lifelong resident of the area where the film was made.

There will be short introductory talks by Dave and Denean.

Doors at 18.30, show starts at 19.30.
