About Kennington Noir presents The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946)
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946), directed by Lewis Milestone, with Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott and Kirk Douglas in his film debut.
In 1928, as a 13-year-old, Martha tries to escape her wealthy and domineering aunt with her school friend Sam. She is found by the police and returned to her aunt. The aunt is later found dead under mysterious circumstances. Moving forward to 1946. Martha has inherited the family factory, and married Walter, whose father was a friend of Mrs Ivers, while Sam has returned home from war service and teamed up with Toni, a young woman recently released from prison. When Walter and Martha find out that Sam has returned, they worry that he may know the true facts about Mrs Ivers’s death.
With a powerful script from Robert Rossen and strong performances from the four leads, this is a perfect noir that keeps you guessing about the characters’ motives right up to the last minute.
