Perched inside Watling Street in Cannock, The Four Crosses Inn looks like any old English pub - half timbered, stooped under centuries of history. Yet to those who've lingered after closing time, it is more than a public house. It's a place where time thins and the dead still gather for one last round.

Buillt in the 17th century upon the fooundations of a 1600's coaching house, The Four Crosses has seen births, deaths and darker things whispered across it's ale stained tables. The walls are thick but not thick enough to contain the stories. Patrons have spoken of shadows that move against the grain of the light, of phantom children darting up the staircase and of a woman eeeping in an upstairs room long after the guests have gone.

Perhaps the most chilliing account is of a young girl said to hang hung herself from a beam above the bar centuries ago. Her small figure has been glimpsed in the corner of the mittors - her eyes hollow, her face pale as the moonlight that bleeds throught the leaded glass. Staff have found children's toys moved in locked rooms, footsteps pacing in empty corridors and glasses flung from the shelves as though in sudden fury.
