About Carnival of Souls (1962) Presented by: Not By Lynch

Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls is one of cinema’s great one-offs: a regional, ultra-low-budget horror film that feels strangely timeless. Mary, a church organist, survives a car crash and relocates to a small town, where she finds herself ignored by strangers, followed by a pale, grinning man, and inexorably drawn toward a derelict pleasure pavilion.

Shot in grainy black-and-white around empty streets and the eerie Saltair amusement park, the film creates an atmosphere of isolation and dislocation that many critics have linked to the later work of David Lynch. Its drifting heroine, hollow public spaces and unsettling organ score anticipate the liminal dread of Eraserhead and Twin Peaks. Long neglected, Carnival of Souls has become a cult classic and an essential waypoint in the history of the Lynchian.

With an accompanying essay and introduction by critic, Kirsty Asher.
