About Brute Force (1947) Presented by: Kennington Noir
Brute Force (1947), directed by Jules Dassin, with Burt Lancaster, Hume Cronyn, Charles Bickford and Yvonne De Carlo.
Westgate Prison is a grim place. The warden has lost control of the place to his sadistic chief of security, Capt. Munsey (Cronyn), who oversees a regime of informants and brutal punishment. Joe Collins (Lancaster), recently released from a spell in solitary confinement, is angry and talks about escaping. He has been told his wife is not willing to have an operation for cancer unless Joe can be there with her.
This was Lancaster’s second film, following The Killers (1946), and he was already a charismatic leading man, although he is almost acted off the screen by Cronyn’s brutal captain. The inspiration for the film and its unremitting violence were events at Alcatraz Prison in 1946, when, following a failed escape attempt, prisoners fought for two days rather than surrender to the authorities.
