About Act of Violence (1948) Presented by Kennington Noir

Director Fred Zinnemann, and starring Van Heflin, Robert Ryan and Janet Leigh. Digital presentation.

A World War II veteran’s peaceful home life is shattered by memories of the past when
a former war comrade arrives in town with murderous intentions.

One of the first Hollywood films to address the problems of World War II veterans, Act of Violence was one of the first MGM films completed under the stewardship of Head of Production Dore Schary, following his move from RKO. The success of this film led to further gritty dramas such as The Asphalt Jungle (1950).

“Stresses the recurrent noir theme of sudden, annihilating misfortune” – film writer Foster Hirsch.
