About Film: Women and Cocaine presents Street Scene (1931)
On a sweltering summer day in a Hell’s Kitchen tenement, neighbours gather to argue and gossip as whispers of an illicit affair spread. Directed by King Vidor and starring Sylvia Sidney, Street Scene transforms a single city block into a potent portrait of urban life, where desire and desperation collide and tensions simmer beneath the surface in a vivid cross-section of the American melting pot. Adapted from Elmer Rice’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, this fascinating early sound drama uniquely captures the humanity of lives lived in close quarters.
The film will be preceded by a short introduction, and followed by a raffle.
Seating is unallocated. Service dogs welcome. Unfortunately, this film screening does not have closed captions or audio description available.
