About The Watermelon Woman (1996) Presented by: La Monocle’s Film Club
We are back with the fifth edition of La Monocle’s monthly queer film club, created in collaboration with the wonderful Caroline Cassin. Each month, we gather to celebrate queer cinema, build community, and create a welcoming space to meet new people. This month we are going to be showing Cheryl Dunye’s 1996 romantic comedy drama The Watermelon Woman.
Starring Cheryl Dunye and Guinevere Turner, the film surrounds Cheryl, a young black lesbian filmmaker in Philadelphia as she sets out to make a film about Fae Richards, a Black actress from the 1930s known for playing the stereotypical ‘mammy’ roles relegated to Black actresses during the period.
We’ll open doors at 6:30pm for a relaxed hour of mingling giving you a chance to chat and make friends. Drinks and snacks will be available at The Cinema Museum cafe/bar.
The film begins at 7.30pm. Whether it’s simply wanting a warm space to carry conversations, wanting to meet new people or to discover the beauty of Queer cinema, we got you.
