About Julien Donkey-Boy (1999)

Julien Donkey-Boy, 1999, United States

Harmony Korine’s Julien Donkey-Boy follows a schizophrenic young man adrift within a deeply dysfunctional family. Its use of grainy, digital video textures and elliptical, fragmented imagery blends abrasive immediacy with moments of unexpected tenderness. The first Dogme 95 film made outside Europe, which reaffirmed Korine’s singular vision while pushing the movement’s stripped-back aesthetics into new, emotionally resonant territory.

With an introduction by Leo Krenzer.
