About The Welkin by Lucy Kirkwood at The Wagner Hall, Brighton
Identity Theatre bring Lucy Kirkwood's magnificent historical play - The Welkin to central Brighton
Premiered at the National Theatre in January 2020, The Welkin was cancelled early in its run by the advent of the Pandemic. Identity Theatre Company are pleased to bring this explosive, raucous, feminist fable to the stage in Central Brighton.
The play is set in rural Suffolk, in 1759. As the country waits to see Halley's Comet appear and what portents it will bring, Sally Poppy is sentenced to hang for a heinous murder - when she claims to be pregnant, a jury of twelve local matrons are taken from their housework to decide whether she's telling the truth, or simply trying to escape the noose.
With only midwife Lizzy Luke prepared to defend the girl, and a mob baying for blood outside, the matrons wrestle with their new authority, and the devil in their midst...
THE WELKIN CONTAINS ADULT THEMES AND LANGUAGE, including scenes of a violent and distressing nature, domestic abuse, miscarriage, descriptions of hanging and sexual assault, murder and strong language.
