Bristol Cathedral and 1831 Riots Tour : Thursday 24th April at 10:45

Excursion organiser: Julie Hall                Email: juliehall380@gmail.com

Bristol Cathedral was founded in 1140 as an abbey on the supposed site of St Augustine’s convocation with Celtic Christians in 603. It became a cathedral with the dissolution of the monasteries. Two towers were added on the west front which was erected in the nineteenth century. A recent programme of renovations has seen many features and monuments restored to their former splendour. We will be given an exclusive guided tour of the Cathedral lasting around 60 minutes.

In October 1831, riots broke out in Bristol after the House of Lords rejected a Reform Bill intended to extend voting rights to more men in England. Angry Bristolians set buildings alight, freed prisoners and looted shops before being violently dispersed by cavalry led by Lt. Colonel Brereton. Our guide is local author and expert Steve Spear who has written two books on the subject and the latest, 1831 The Desolation, is available at MShed.

The walk will take in Queen Square and the Old Gaol before returning to MShed around 3.30pm.

Meeting time and place:

At the entrance to the Cathedral, College Green, BS1 5TJ at 10:45.

After lunch we will meet at 1:45pm outside MShed on Bristol harbourside at Princes Wharf, BS1 4RN. Dress for outdoor walking

Various city centre car parks are in the vicinity but from Bath a choice of public transport is available with the X39 bus, Park & Ride from Brislington or train to Temple Meads to avoid city traffic.

There are many possibilities for lunch around the harbour between the Cathedral and MShed
