About Mobile Apothecary #3

Midsummer monthly edition of the Mobile Apothecary at Phytology's abundant medicinal meadow.

We will gather to meet the seasonal beauty of June-time healing herbs in their full bloom and life, harvesting Comfrey leaf and other plants in season to make into a powerful anti-inflammatory bruise ointment.

This month's Apothecary day will be led by Melissa Ronaldson, excellent herbalist and medicine-maker of Stormvogel the Herbal Barge and Herbalists Without Borders London. Melissa will share her experiences of bringing herbal first aid to displaced people living in intolerable circumstances in Calais and Dunkirk and will demonstrate the making of the bruise balm that she uses there, with locally grown and harvested herbs. This is a remedy equally helpful for our homeless community navigating the streets of London and we will make a stock of the balm for distribution from the Mobile Apothecary the next day.

Join us to learn more about supporting underserved communities with little or no access to healthcare in our city, about the healing plants growing widely around us and how to transform them into medicine, and become part of our growing networks of herbal community solidarity!

Day outline:

Meet 11am at Phytology, Bethnal Green Nature Reserve, Middleton Street, London E2 9RR

11am-12.30pm - herb walking & harvesting in the meadow

12.30-2pm - demo of ointment making & knowledge-sharing

2-3pm - shared lunch: we ask participants to bring vegetarian food to share, complemented with leaves from the garden!

Products made during the workshop will be donated to the Mobile Apothecary - distributing fresh herbal remedies locally alongside Refugee Community Kitchen in Hackney.

Herbalists without Borders London have been offering support and solidarity to displaced people in the UK and abroad with herbal medicines since 2015.
In winter 2018 a root harvest and medicine making workshop organised in partnership with Phytology and St Margaret’s House in Bethnal Green, to create a stock of first-aid remedies for herbalists to take to Calais & Dunkirk, inspired an exciting model for community-delivered herbal healthcare. This collaborative project is kindly supported by St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace.
