About Seeking Mavis Beacon + Short Film - Palestine Fundraiser

The most recognisable woman in technology lives in our collective imagination. ‘Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing’ taught millions globally, but the software’s Haitian-born cover model vanished decades ago. Two DIY detectives search for the model while posing questions about identity and artificial intelligence.

Screening with short film The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing. When a Palestinian filmmaker based in Scotland unearths a rarely-seen Scottish film archive of Palestinian wild flowers, he decides to reclaim the footage. This tender essay film questions the role of image making as a tool of both testimony and violence when connected to entanglements between people and land.

This event is a fundraising event for Palestine, with 100% of the proceeds from the event to be donated to families in Gaza.

With thanks to Jan A. who will be hosting the screening. With thanks to the Scottish Documentary Institute and T A P E Collective for permission to screen the films. Bring cash on the night as this event will also include a raffle!

Content advice: contains strong language and reclaimed racial language.

Leith Kino!

A weekly community cinema night based at Leith Depot.

Join us for weekly screenings, celebrating films that are international, experimental, arthouse, trash, cult, a little bit strange, and maybe otherwise hard to see on the big screen.

Each screening will be introduced by a member of the Leith Kino collective and, importantly, there will be free (vegan) popcorn.

Drinks and refreshments are available to purchase at the Depot bar, alongside our monthly posters, each designed by a different Leith-based artist.
