About Spontaneous Combustion (1990) Presented by: Not By Lynch

In Spontaneous Combustion, Tobe Hooper imagines the fallout from a secret 1950s nuclear experiment. Decades later, the test couple’s son—played by Brad Dourif—discovers that strong emotions trigger deadly bursts of flame. Dourif’s intense performance anchors a film that veers from melodrama to body horror to conspiracy thriller.

Its checkerboard floors, shadowy conspirators and sudden eruptions of energy feel oddly close to the nightmares of Twin Peaks: The Return, where nuclear tests open portals to darker realms. Dourif, a Lynch collaborator, brings further resonance. As part of Not By Lynch, the film offers a trash?horror reflection of nuclear anxiety and inherited trauma.

With an accompanying essay and introduction by critic, Sam Warren Miell.
