About El Topo (1970) on 35mm
El Topo, 1970, Mexico
Set in a hallucinatory, brutal desert, El Topo follows a black-clad gunfighter on a quest for spiritual awakening through a series of ritual confrontations. Directed by and starring Alejandro Jodorowsky, the film traces his downfall and transformation as he seeks redemption among a community of outcasts. A striking fusion of symbolism and violence, it became a defining work of the midnight movie phenomenon.
With an introduction by Leo Krenzer. Screened from a 35mm print in the Museum’s collection.
