About Onibaba (1964) on 35mm
Onibaba, 1964, Japan
Onibaba follows two women who survive by killing stray samurai and trading their possessions. Directed by Kaneto Shindo, the film traces how desire, resentment, and suspicion unravel their fragile existence when a returning soldier disrupts their lives. Set in the windswept marshlands of medieval Japan, and accompanied by a haunting score from Hikaru Hayashi, this eerie folktale offers a disturbing vision of primal urges and a descent into darkness.
Fun fact: It’s a favourite of actor, Willem Dafoe, who has called it "very, very special".
With an introduction by Leo Krenzer. Screened from a 35mm print in the Museum's collection.
