What happens when we treat rope not as performance or protocol, but as play?

We talk a lot of “play”. But what does “play” mean? It is more than a word. It a way of exploring the world, a way of experiencing self and other. Play, in its truest sense, is a psychological necessity. Play is not a luxury or a distraction, it is not frivolous. It is a core part of how we grow, relate, and make meaning. Play is how we experiment safely with roles, boundaries, emotions, and imagination. It allows us to rehearse vulnerability, explore power, take risks, and express parts of ourselves that may not find space in our day-to-day lives.

In psychological terms, play creates a transitional space, a liminal zone between the internal world and the external one. In this space, we are freer to explore and connect with Self and Other.

Play comes naturally to us as children, but as adults play often eludes us. We learn not to play but to perform. We learn to produce. We carry the burdens of expectation, perfectionism, and conditions of worth.

In rope, there is the possibility for creating intentional containers of play. We can encourage improvisation over precision, curiosity over certainty, and exploration over control. We can engage with rope not just as a tool or skill, but as a language, one that can be joyful, emotional, strange, erotic, or deeply personal. Play in rope nourishes us, and when done intentionally, it can be one of the most powerful ways we learn about ourselves and the people we tie.

This workshop explores rope bondage as a playful, expressive, and psychologically rich space, one that invites curiosity, risk, connection, and discovery. We’ll explore how rope can become a playground and we’ll look at ways to engage with rope bondage not just a practice of technique, but as a method of communication, creativity, intimacy, and play.

Facilitators (this is a co-facilitated workshop and will feature input from both facilitators):

Tangled Magnolia (she/they) and Fae Sybarite (they/them/it) have been practising rope bondage together for well over ten years. In the beginning these explorations were inspired by themes of control, restraint, power exchange, suffering, and eroticism. Over the years though their explorations ventured into wilder, stranger, less well-trodden territories and they began to explore themes of self, intimacy, identity, semantics, moments, and obscurity.

Fae Sybarite is a primarily a rigger who delights in the ebb and flow of a rope scene, exploring the hidden facets of their partner's personality, causing and observing reactions, and relishing in the rare delight of creating a space in which they and their partner can be singularly present in only the moment.

Tangled Magnolia is a rope switch who enjoys the way that rope can envelope the body as well as the mind, moving focus from the world outside, to the self, surrendering to the sensations and emotions that are being evoked. When tying, they enjoy simplicity and playfulness with their tying partner. They also believe in the importance of empowering rope bottoms by increasing their knowledge of rope bondage as well as their skills in active bottoming.

Play is not optional, it is a psychological necessity. In this workshop, we’ll examine:

• Play as a liminal space

• The concepts of Self and Other in the context of rope bondage

• What play means in a rope context

• How we can intentionally cultivate playfulness in our scenes and dynamics

• How can rope help us explore the hidden or playful parts of ourselves and our partners

You’ll be guided through three or four structured exercises, depending on timings, each grounded in intention. Expect moments of connection, spontaneity, and silliness. There will be space given for reflection and discussion.

This workshop invites participants to shed performances, inhibitions, and preconceptions and to step into the space willing to engage with rope bondage not just as a practical activity, but as space for expression, emotion, and exploration.

For the person tying you should have:

• A confident single-column tie

• Solid rope handling skills

• Familiarity with hitches, knots, and frictions

• Confidence in your ability to improvise with rope

For the person being tied you should have:

• Solid knowledge of the difference between nerve impingement and circulation loss

• The ability to communicate when in rope

What to bring:

• Your rope partner (tickets are for pairs)

• At least 8 lengths of 7–8m jute or similar natural-fibre rope

• Safety shears

• Snacks, water, blankets, etc.

• Notebook and pen for notes

• A desire to step outside of comfort zones and explore beyond the technical

• A willingness to communicate, listen, and engage with openness

Important Notes:

• This workshop will involve floor rope only. There will no suspension, though the concepts of play in rope bondage can be taken into any and all rope scenes

• This is not a play event or club setting; the workshop takes place in a dance studio and focuses on education, connection, and intentional rope practice

• You and your partner should have a clear understanding of each other’s limits, communication styles, and risk profiles before attending
