About Book Fringe: The Inugami Family (1976)

This August, Argonaut Books and Leith Kino are joining forces for a special Book Fringe collaboration.

Join us inside Argonaut Books for a programme of evening screenings celebrating underappreciated films with literary connections. We've got feature length adaptations of acclaimed Japanese murder mysteries, 1960s Czechoslovak sci-fi, and star-studded, forgotten gems of North American counterculture.

The Inugami Family (1976)

One of the great trends of 2020s publishing has been the new English-language translations of Japanese mystery and crime fiction from across the 20th Century. Chief among the authors getting this treatment has been Seishi Yokomizo, a prolific writer of murder mysteries whose eccentric detective Kosuke Kindaichi has been read as Japan's answer to Hercule Poirot or Sherlock Holmes.

The Inugami Family is a 1970s adaptation of Yokomizo's The Inugami Curse (1951) and the first of many adaptations directed by Kon Ichikawa that would find great popularity in Japan over the next few years. Written in the immediate aftermath of World War II, The Inugami Family sees Kindaichi navigate the spiteful world of Japanese aristocracy after a wealthy patriarch dies and leaves a juicy will to his greedy descendants.

We'll be screening The Inugami Family from a new 4k restoration by Radiance Films ahead of its official release later this year.

Tickets cost £6 and there are a number of free tickets available here for those not in a position to pay.

Please note that this screening will take place inside Argonaut Books (not Leith Depot).
