About Thunder Road (1958) Presented by Kennington Noir
Director Arthur Ripley, and starring Robert Mitchum and Gene Barry. 35mm film presentation.
An American Southern Gothic film noir starring Robert Mitchum as a Tennessee moonshine driver. Out making dangerous high-speed deliveries, he is under pressure from gangsters wanting in on the action, and Treasury agents wanting him in jail.
Some fun facts. Mitchum gets a story credit – he was told by writer James Agee about an incident in which a driver transporting moonshine was said to have crashed to his death on Kingston Pike in Knoxville, Tennessee. The part of Mitchum’s son in the film was due to be played by Elvis Presley, and having been sent the screenplay by Mitchum, Elvis was keen, but Colonel Tom Parker demanded a ridiculously inflated fee for his client, and the part went to Mitchum’s son James. Bruce Springsteen says he was inspired to call his song Thunder Road after seeing a poster of the film – but he has not seen the film itself!
