Founded in 1966, the Gothique Film Society specialises in double bills ‘for the connoisseur of the macabre’.

Creature with the Atom Brain continues our ‘season within a season’ tribute to legendary producer Sam Katzman, who made hundreds of low budget films and serials from the 30s right up to the 60s.

Creature with the Atom Brain is a typical Katzman production, with the usual ‘off the wall’ premise that we at the Gothique love so much. A scientist, who has found a way to reanimate the dead, has happily accepted funding from a gangster – but is then not at all pleased when the gangster wants to use this awful secret for his own ghastly ends…

On its release in the USA, one local educational teachers’ group criticised it for being “a grotesque distortion of scientific facts”: Surely not??!

I Married a Monster from Outer Space has one of the best exploitation titles of all time – but this catch-penny title hides a surprisingly literate and thoughtful film.

On her wedding night, Marge realises that husband Bill is not the man she thought he was, and her search for the truth – with more and more townsfolk ‘turning’ as well – makes absorbing viewing.

Masked, perhaps, by the film’s low budget/sci-fi setting, the script arguably goes as close as any other from that era in articulating a woman’s expectations of her wedding night. This is definitely not your usual 50s sci-fi fare!
