About Tales from the Hood (1995)

Join Leith Kino as we slip into scary season with 1995 portmanteau horror anotholgy film Tales from the Hood. Black people and Black bodies have long been othered by the horror genre, alongside other minoritised communities including the Disabled and Queer communities, either presenting as the horror themselves, or being the first to die from whatever horror on hand. Tropes such as these have since been satirised in contemporary horror comedies such as The Blackening (2023), which carried the tagline 'We All Can't Die First'. A great source of insight into the development of Black Horror up until Jordan Peel's seminal Get Out (2017) is documentary Horror Noire, A History of Black Horror (2019) which features Tales from the Hood.

Consisting of four stories-within-a-story, and executive produced by Spike Lee, the film explores the horrors in the African American experience, including the terrifying impact of police brutality and systematic racism. Nevertheless and pertinent political commentary aside, the film is also very much a horror comedy, in a film that director Rusty Cundieff was clearly aiming at a Black audience. This spooky season, come check out a cult classic of Black horror, criminally undervalued and underseen.

The film will be screened with descriptive subtitles. Content notes, the film contains scenes of: police brutality, domestic violene, racist language, archival footage of racist violence and images of real dead bodies, and a prolonged scene of strobe lighting.

A weekly community cinema night based at Leith Depot.

Join us for weekly screenings, celebrating films that are international, experimental, arthouse, trash, cult, a little bit strange, and maybe otherwise hard to see on the big screen.

There will be free (vegan) popcorn. Drinks and refreshments are available to purchase at the Depot bar, alongside our monthly posters, each designed by a different Leith-based artist.

• The screening room is on ground level and is wheelchair accessible from the Leith Depot bar with flexible seating to accommodate specific requirements.
  There are accessible toilets in both the screening room and the bar.
