After directing some of the most acclaimed art house films of the 1970s with Je Tu Il Elle and Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, filmmaker Chantal Akerman set her sights on more accessible fare with Golden Eighties. Pulling inspiration from musicals from both the Technicolor era of the 1950s as well as the films of Jacques Demy, Golden Eighties offers the perfect starting point to Akerman’s incredibly singular filmography.

Golden Eighties unfolds entirely inside the walls of a bustling Belgian shopping mall, through the song and dance of a group of women yearning for love whilst tending to the hustle and bustle of running their shops. Featuring an ensemble of French cinema legends including Delphine Seyrig and Charles Denner, and Akerman’s signature feminist approach to storytelling, Golden Eighties is not only an underseen work within the filmmaker’s oeuvre, but a musical just waiting to be rediscovered!

A weekly community cinema night based at Leith Depot.

Join us for weekly screenings, celebrating films that are international, experimental, arthouse, trash, cult, a little bit strange, and maybe otherwise hard to see on the big screen.

There will be free (vegan) popcorn. Drinks and refreshments are available to purchase at the Depot bar, alongside our monthly posters, each designed by a different Leith-based artist.

• English subtitles will be onscreen for every screening, including descriptive subtitles where possible.
• The screening room is on ground level and is wheelchair accessible from the Leith Depot bar with flexible seating to accommodate specific requirements.
  There are accessible toilets in both the screening room and the bar.
