About Women & Cocaine presents Ann Vickers (1933) with film historian Kim Luperi, author of Pre-Code Essentials

Join Women & Cocaine and our extra special guest, film historian Kim Luperi, author of Pre-Code Essentials, who is visiting us from across the pond for a screening of one of Pre-Code Hollywood’s most fascinatingly unruly films.

Irene Dunne stars as Ann Vickers, a fiercely independent social reformer determined to improve the lives of women in the prison system. After an affair with a soldier leaves her pregnant, Ann throws herself into prison reform, only to find herself battling corrupt officials and a system designed to keep women powerless.

Adapted from Sinclair Lewis’s controversial novel, Ann Vickers is a fascinating snapshot of Hollywood just before the Production Code tightened its grip. It’s messy, provocative and surprisingly frank, and a perfect example of why Pre-Code Hollywood could be so daring and delicious.

Kim will also be signing copies of her book Pre-Code Essentials: Must-See Cinema from Hollywood’s Untamed Era, 1930-1934.
